US Users Start Getting Android 1.5…or Not

Posted by: Anthony Carter

A few days ago, we mentioned that T-Mobile USA was delaying the release of Cupcake (aka Android 1.5) for about a week, but we’ve recently heard that some G1 users are suddenly getting updates.  However, these rumors may not be as true and as exciting as we thought.  No official word from T-Mobile USA has been heard, and the images we’ve seen that came along with these rumors show a UK build of Android.  In fact, it looks like only those users who have the UK build installed on their US G1 are getting the updates.  So for those of us using the US build on our US G1s, it looks like it will still be a while.

Rogers Wireless, which earlier announced that it is going to carry both the HTC Dream and HTC Magic, has recently changed up their pricing.  Earlier, they announced that both handsets would retail for $549.99 but would be knocked down to $149.99 with a three year contract.  However, that price has suddenly been changed within 24 hours of its announcement.  We’ve now heard that both the Dream and Magic are going to cost $649.99, so after the $400 rebate for a three year contract, they could cost around $250.  We’ve heard Rogers may actually increase the discount a bit and sell the handsets for $199.99 with the contract, but that’s still pretty expensive.

More News from Rogers

As if the earlier news about the HTC Dream and the HTC Magic weren’t enough, we’ve recently picked up a few more bits of news from Canada.  In addition to the two HTC phones, the company will also offer the new iPhone and a few other new devices.  What we’re interested in, of course, is the final confirmation on the Dream and the Magic.  Rogers has confirmed that the HTC Dream will be available in limited quantities on June 2nd, with more devices on sale June 12.  The cost will be $649.99 or $199.99 with a 3-year contract.  The Magic also hits stores on June 2nd for the same price.

HTC Touch Pro 2 to be Released on June 12?

Rumors have recently come to light concerning the HTC Touch Pro 2 and its UK release.  According to what we’ve heard, eXpansys UK will be releasing the device on June 12.  Does this mean the Touch Pro 2 will be released in other parts of the world on the same date?  Well, we haven’t heard anything other than this UK date, but that doesn’t mean the Touch Pro 2 won’t start showing up in other places around the same time.  Hopefully, we’ll get confirmation on that soon.

Want to provide your HTC device with some extra battery power during the day?  Purchase one of these cool HTC Desktop Cradles by Mobi Products.  The cradles provide a dock for your HTC Fuze, Diamond, Touch Pro, and other models.  They provide extra battery power to your phone while it’s docked so the battery doesn’t run down, plus you can plug in a spare battery to charge at the same time.  The cradle also includes a clear stylus that is lit from the bottom so you can find it in a dark room.  If your Fuze or Touch Pro seems to always have a low battery or you keep losing it in the clutter on your desk, you might like one of these cradles.

More Fake Magic

We’ve mentioned fake HTC devices before, and it looks like the forgers have recently released a huge wave of fake HTC Magics on ebay.  If you come across one of these handsets (they’re starting around $122.99 on the auction site), don’t fall for it.  While it looks like a Magic, it doesn’t feature 3G, Android, or even an HTC logo.  It’s really not worth the money at all, plus there’s always the chance that the fakers will simply scam you out of your hard-earned cash and not send you anything (or send you a nice piece of plastic that does nothing).  Trust us—wait for the real thing.

CDMA/GSM Touch Pro 2 Visits the FCC

The recently announced HTC Touch Pro 2 on Sprint’s line is rumored to have both GSM and CDMA radios, and it looks like that rumor has a lot of truth behind it.  We’ve just learned that HTC has filed more paperwork with the FCC for another version of the HTC Rhodium (their name for the Touch Pro 2) that discusses CDMA compliance.  Of course, just because GSM isn’t mentioned doesn’t mean it’s not there—the FCC doesn’t really care if there’s a locked-down GSM radio on the device as long as it’s not used in the US.  The forms from the FCC list two models: the RHOD400 and RHOD500.  Could one be the Sprint version and one the Verizon version?

Sprint’s Touch Pro 2 to Appear in June?

While we’ve seen and heard about T-Mobile’s version of the HTC Touch Pro 2 and the unbranded version, this is the first we’ve seen of Sprint’s version of the device.  It is currently available in some Sprint stores as an in-store demo, which means that the real thing probably isn’t far from being released.  In fact, most people are expecting a mid-June release on the device, although that doesn’t exactly match all the schedules we’ve seen.  Still, anyone on Sprint’s network who is looking for the next big HTC device should get ready to pick up the Touch Pro 2.
