HTC Hero to Run Android?

Well, after that very pink HTC Hero picture that was released awhile ago, we wondered what HTC was thinking.  CodeAndroid has come across a new image of the Hero, however, and it’s a much calmer black.  The design of the device may turn off some, but the Hero also have a few features that make us very exciting, including the first 3.5mm headphone jack to ever appear on an HTC Android phone!  There’s also no trackball or other control pad of any sort, so it looks like the touchscreen may be the only navigation tool on the Hero.  Is that a plus or a minus?  We will only know when the device launches.

Rumors About the HTC T-Mobile G2?!

It seems just like yesterday that we were fielding rumors about the HTC G1, and now, we’re already hearing things about the HTC T-Mobile G2, the second Android-powered smartphone.  Can it be true?  Well, one of those rumors is a January 26, 2009 release date.  That one, we’re betting is false.  Some of the others, though, include that the G2 will be a full touch device, so there won’t be any physical keyboard included.  Supposedly, it was originally slated for a February 2009 release but that has been bumped back to April because of software issues.  Another rumor says that the G2 will launch on not only T-Mobile but also another carrier as well, although that carrier will have to carry the device under a different name.  Interesting bits of information, but none of it is confirmed yet.  As always, we’ll keep you updated as new rumors come in.

That’s right, Google’s Android operating system has finally moved beyond the G1.  Some enterprising phone fans have been working to bring the operating system to other phones, and Engadget has an encouraging video of Android running on the HTC Touch.  This has been in the works for some time now, and while some ports of the open source Android haven’t been that great, this one is.  The Touch version featured a soft keyboard and several other Android features, although there’s no Bluetooth, GPS, or USB features yet.  This version of Android for the Touch is live, too, so if you’re daring, you can download it and give it a shot.  After all, you only need to restart your phone to get back to Windows Mobile, so why not give Android a test drive?

Google and HTC have recently launched a new version of the HTC Dream, this one aimed not at consumers but at developers.  The goal here is to give developers something to test out their new applications on without dealing with the SDK emulator or forcing them to have access to T-Mobile.

Well, news barely got out about Google’s new developer-aimed HTC Dream/G1 than another bit of news leaked out.  It looks like the bootloader for the G1 development version is no longer a closely guarded secret!  According to the crew over at the Boy Genius Report, someone at T-Mobile accidentally handed out one of the developer-only versions of the phone to a hacker as a warranty replacement device.  Well, it didn’t take long for this adept phone fan to have the unlocked bootloader extracted and posted for all to download.

Every month, the Brighthand website puts together a list of the most popular smartphones and other handheld devices for the previous month.  HTC has claimed the key spot on November’s list—the T-Mobile G1, previously number five, has climbed to the top!  As the first phone to run Android and its focus on users, it’s no wonder the G1 is so popular.  But HTC has more to celebrate.  the HTC Touch Diamond holds the number three spot, and the HTC Touch Pro has joined the top ten list in the number nine position.  So far, RIM appears to be HTC’s major competitor.  They also have claimed three of the spots on the list (numbers four, eight, and ten), but while HTC’s devices are rising, RIM’s are dropping.

Want a T-Mobile G1?  OK, no problem.  Want one in white?  Well, you’ll be facing a short delay—the white G1 isn’t on T-Mobile’s website yet, and it looks like it won’t actually be available to the general public until after Thanksgiving.  According to Engadget, who got this juicy tidbit from TMO News, the white G1 isn’t shipping to the US until after the holiday.  The issue seems to be that the white paint used on the phone chips much too easily, although that’s just a rumor at this point.  However, there is some precedent for this: Dell had the same issue with their white XPS m1330 laptop a year ago, and they ended up discontinuing the white model completely.

The Long Road to the G1

Few people outside the developing companies of Google and HTC had any idea just how long the two companies have been working on their Android phone until HTC revealed exactly how much time has been invested in this phone. Their Chief Marketing Officer made mention of beginning talks with Google almost five years ago. That was before HTC had even acquired Android! The Android team has been working diligently for the past three years to create the G1, but all signs point to it being worth the wait. Plus, if it going like every other piece of technology has, once the initial Android phone is completed, the improvements and additions will take much less time.
